Mercedes-Benz G-Class (G500) Big Brake Kit Upgrade / TTSPORT Evolution Series

by LinLynn 16 Jul 2026

A stock Mercedes-Benz G500 is a lot of truck for a brake system to slow down — 2.5+ tons of body-on-frame SUV, a 5.5L V8 making 388 hp and 530 N·m of torque, and 22-inch wheels adding rotational mass on top of it all. After years of daily driving and towing duty, this owner's factory brakes had lost the bite they came with, so the shop went with a front ten-piston / rear four-piston TTSPORT carbon-ceramic big brake kit for a full reset.

Given the G500's mass and the sustained heat load of hard braking from highway speeds, the shop specified a ten-piston front caliper and a matching 420x40mm carbon-ceramic rotor — a big jump in both clamping area and thermal mass compared with the factory setup. The rear picked up a four-piston caliper on a 410x32mm carbon-ceramic disc to balance front-to-rear bias.

These rotors aren't cast iron or steel — they're a carbon fiber and silicon carbide composite cured at roughly 1700°C. That process is why a carbon-ceramic disc can run less than half the weight of a same-size iron rotor without giving up heat capacity, which matters a lot on a vehicle carrying this much curb weight.

Why It Works

  • Larger rotor diameter and thickness (420x40mm front, 410x32mm rear) add swept area and thermal mass, which resists the fade that comes from repeated heavy braking in a 2.5-ton SUV.
  • A ten-piston front caliper spreads clamping force over more pad area than a factory single- or dual-piston design, giving a firmer, more consistent pedal instead of a long, soft travel.
  • Carbon-ceramic construction cuts unsprung and rotational mass at each corner compared with a steel disc of the same size, which is worth more on a heavy 4x4 platform running 22-inch wheels than most owners expect.
  • The kit was confirmed to fit behind the vehicle's factory 22-inch wheels, so there's no need to change wheel offset or size to run it.

What does the G500 big brake kit include?
The front axle gets a ten-piston fixed caliper paired with a 420x40mm carbon-ceramic rotor, and the rear axle gets a four-piston fixed caliper paired with a 410x32mm carbon-ceramic rotor. The kit was confirmed to clear the vehicle's 22-inch wheels.
How much lighter is a carbon-ceramic rotor than a stock steel rotor?
As a size-for-size example, a 380mm carbon-ceramic rotor weighs about 6.4 kg, versus roughly 15.4 kg for a same-diameter steel rotor — less than half the mass at the corner.
